We don’t have that much real young talent (in Pakistan) : Afridi
Shahid Afridi believes that Pakistan cricket is suffering because of the lack of young talents coming through due to the negligence of the board. The 36-year old also said that he will continue to focus on T20 cricket, and that he is working hard to regain form and fitness before the England tour.
"The way I see it right now we don't have that much real talent in the background. I can't pinpoint any young player with certainty. I think the Board needs to pay attention to school cricket and work at the grassroot level," said the charismatic all-rounder, speaking to GeoSuper channel.
"I am just focussing on T20 cricket and I had informed the board about my commitment in English county cricket this summer. But I will obviously work hard on my form and fitness in order to make it to the Pakistan team," Afridi said.
A 35-man training camp organized for the upcoming England tour saw Afridi, along with Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad, missing the cut. With Inzamam-ul-Haq heading the selection committee, Afridi has officially been rested, but the case of Shehzad and Akmal is not very lucid, with rumours of lack of discipline cited in the media.
"I don't know why they (Shehzad, Umar Akmal) are dropped, but if discipline is the reason then obviously they need to pay attention to this and work harder on their cricket. I also agree that there should be no compromise on discipline and it is time to give young players a chance," added the former Pakistan T20 captain.
Pakistan’s tour of England begins in July and will comprise of 4 Tests and 5 ODIs, along with one T20I.
