Court dismisses case against Dhoni for being depicted as MahaVishnu on mag cover
The Supreme Court today put an end to the long-drawn case filed against MS Dhoni who had been depicted as MahaVishnu on the cover of a magazine. The SC refused to oblige the charge over hurt religious sentiments and dismissed the case saying the trial court had not followed due procedure of law.
Indian ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had drawn a lot of flak for appearing as Lord Vishnu in an advertisement published on the cover of Business Today, back in 2013 where he had held multiple objects in his numerous hands including a shoe.
Based on a complaint by VHP leader Shyam Sunder, the court in Anantapur had issued a non-bailable warrant against the captain on January 7. Bangalore-based RTI activist Jayakumar Hiremath also had filed a case against Dhoni and five editors of the magazine for “hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community”.
A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi granted the relief to the Indian skipper after noting that the Karnataka trial court had summoned the cricketer without following the due procedure of law.
“We interfere with the order of the High Court and quash the proceedings including the summoning order against the accused... we have taken note of the complaint and the offence alleged while passing this order” the bench said.
