ICC World Cup 2019 | New Zealand don't do that well in crunch situations, claims Azhar Mahmood

New Zealand have been an embodiment of consistency over the past three World Cups, reaching at least the semi-final in each of the last 3 editions. The 2015 finalists have enjoyed an incredible start to the 2019 World Cup, winning five matches thus far, and being the only unbeaten side along with India. New Zealand also reached the semi-final of both the 2007 and the 2011 editions, where they lost to Sri Lanka on both occasions.However, Azhar Mahmood has questioned their ability to peform under pressure stating that they tend to fold under pressure in the back end of World Cups. Speaking to the press ahead of Pakistan's crucial encounter against New Zealand, Mahmood said "New Zealand's history is such that they get there winning, winning and then when a crunch situation comes up, in the semi-final, or quarter-final, they don't do that well," as quoted by Firstpost.Mahmood also talked about the unpredictable nature of the game and hoped that the Kiwis have a bad day at the office so that Pakistan could capitalize on it.  "It can happen to any team. Everyone has to have a bad day. Hopefully, New Zealand have it tomorrow." Mahmood added.Mahmood also drew comparisons to Pakistan's 1992 World Cup campaign, and how the team went on to lift their maiden trophy despite having an indifferent start to the tournament.  Mahmood said that Pakistan will treat every match like a final, and admitted the fact that one poor performance could see them exit the 2019 World Cup. The former Pakistani all-rounder was full of praise for in-form Mohammad Amir, who has been Pakistan's highest wicket taker of this World Cup so far, with 15 wickets. Mahmood praised Amir for his consistency and the skills he has shown with the ball, and said that Amir has the ability to provide key early breakthroughs for the team. 

"Amir has started pushing his lengths up a little, allowing himself to swing the ball," he said. "That has been key for us. It's very important for us that he gives us early breakthroughs and he has that ability. "His skills and ability have always been exceptional." Mahmood said. Mahmood and Pakistan would certainly be hoping for Amir to be at his best, when they take on New Zealand at Edgbaston later today.
