FC Pune City will host fifth placed Chennaiyin FC in their final match of the season at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune on Saturday. The away side will look to confirm their place in the semi-final - they need just a draw against a struggling Pune side, who are stuck in the seventh position after their defeat against NorthEast United FC at Guwahati.

Prediction: FC Pune City 1-3 Chennaiyin FC

1. Chennaiyin’s lethal attack led by Stiven Mendoza will cause Pune problems

The Machans from Chennai have been in tremendous form with three consecutive wins scoring 11 goals and conceding one. The spearhead of Chennaiyin’s attack Stiven Mendoza is the leading goal scorer of the tournament with 11 goals - five of them coming in the last three games. Mendoza’s partner in crime, Jeje Lalpekhlua has also notched up three goals in the last three games.

With Chennaiyin’s attack in ominous form, it will be difficult for Pune to stop the run of goals.

2. Pune’s terrible form

Pune have been in a terrible run of form with four defeats and three draws in the last seven games. If Chennaiyin is scoring goals for fun, then Pune is conceding them left, right and centre. The Stallions have conceded a total 10 goals in the last three matches. In fact, Pune’s last victory came at the end of October, with the Stallions defeating Kerala Blasters 3-2 at home.

A return to home territory is good news for Pune with them having won four out of their six home games this season. However, it is difficult to see anything other than a Chennaiyinyin win considering the form of both teams.

3. Chennaiyin is looking up, while Pune’s season is over

Chennaiyin already has one foot in the playoffs with only a draw needed in the last game to confirm their spot. On the other hand, Pune’s season is effectively over. They are out of the semi-final race, and the only matter of discussion will be their position in the league table. If Pune avoids defeat against Chennaiyin, then they will finish the season at sixth position, or else they will be stuck at the second last position in the table.

With Chennaiyin playing for a play-off spot and Pune playing for pride, the eam in Blue is likely to go through to the last four with a win.
