Indian Super League franchise NorthEast United have replaced Sergio Farias with Portuguese manager Nelo Vingada, the club has confirmed. The 63-year-old has experience of coaching for the past 35 years, along with stints with Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iran's national teams.

NorthEast United were left in a spot of bother when manager Sergio Farias joined his former club Suphanburi FC, just two months after signing for the ISL franchise. However, it seems like the NorthEast side have taken this opportunity to rope in one of the most experienced coaches at the moment.

Nelo Vingada was assistant manager of the Portuguese U-20 team which won the U-20 World Cups in 1989 and 1991. He then coached Portugal's senior team from 1993 to 1994, before being put in charge of the team in the 1996 Olympics. Vingada also has extensive experience of coaching in Asian football, having managed Saudi Arabia, Iranian side Persepolis, and the South Korean club FC Seoul.

His last assignment in Asia was with the Iranian U-23 team, where he was sacked in 2014, after a horror show by his side at the 2014 Asian Games.

“With over 35 years of top flight experience under his belt, the former Portugal National Team Coach, will take over the reigns for the 3rd season of the ISL- Indian Super League.

“Nick-named "The Professor" for his meticulous study and analysis of the game, Nelo Vingada has coached extensively in Asia and comes to India with a proven track record of winning,” read a post published by the NorthEast United official Facebook page.
