Indian Super League (ISL) side NorthEast United have roped in Brazilian Sergio Farias as their head coach for the next season. The 48-year-old has coached Brazil U-20 team in 1998-99 and 2001, before winning the AFC Champions League in 2009 with South Korean club Pohang Steelers.

The ISL franchise confirmed the news through their social media handle on Friday.

The Brazilian also managed his country’s U-17 team and guided them to the title triumph in the 2001 South American Championship. Farias worked with former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho, at the U-20 level. In 2005, Farias moved to Asia and managed South Korean club Pohang Steelers till 2009. Under Farias, Pohang Steelers won the AFC Champions League and the K-League title in 2009, while he also guided the club to the title triumph in the Korean FA Cup in 2008, and a third-place finish at the Club World Cup in 2009.

NorthEast United were managed by Venezuelan Cesar Farias in the last edition of the ISL. The John Abraham owned club finished 5th in 2015 and missed out on a place in the semi-final by just two points. Kiwi Ricki Herbert managed the club in the inaugural edition of the ISL, when the team finished at the bottom of the eight-team table.
