Lewandowski scores a brace after being attacked by flares

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski was attacked by a flare thrown by the home fans in the Group E European Qualification game against Romania yesterday. The Bayern Munich player recovered from the early shock to complete a seven minute brace to ensure Poland sit pretty at the top of Group E.

In the heated World Cup qualifier, Poland took the lead through Kamil Grosicki in the 11th minute. The Rennes forward ran through the heart of he Romanian defence leaving multiple players chasing shadows to put the ball past Ciprian Tatarusanu and handed the Polish the lead.

The match had to be stopped when a flare was thrown in the Bayern player's direction. Although Lewandowski was not hurt as the flare missed its intended target, he did look dazed.

The match had to be stopped again at the end of the first half when fans resorted to throwing flares and firecrackers on the pitch in Bucharest.

Seven minutes from time, however, Lewandowski doubled the lead with a powerful left footed shot that Grosicki was unable to keep out. The 28-year-old, added insult to injury when he converted a penalty that he had won in added time to make it a comfortable 3-0 win.

Poland are the only unbeaten team in Group E and find themselves on top spot with 10 points after four matches. Montenegro (7) are in second place after succumbing to their first defeat of the qualifiers against Armenia.
