Tottenham's attendance for Champions League clash sets new English record
A record 85,011 fans were in attendance at the Wembley Stadium when Tottenham Hotspur took on Monaco in their opening Champions League match this season on Wednesday. Although the match ended in a 1-2 defeat for Spurs, the attendance broke the previous record held by Manchester City in 1934.
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar gave Monaco a convincing win over Tottenham in the opening game of Group E. But the bright spot for Spurs, from an otherwise disappointing outing, was the record attendance they managed on the opening night.
Tottenham have been allowed to host their Champions League matches at the Wembley Stadium this season before they make a move to this ground permanently for the next season while the White Hart Lane is being redeveloped. On Wednesday, 85,011 fans flocked to the stadium to watch Spurs take on Monaco in what was the biggest-ever crowd for a home side playing a club match in England.
The previous record was held by Manchester City, who managed an attendance of 84,467 spectators, when they hosted Stoke City for an FA Cup match at the Maine Road on March 3, 1934. However, Tottenham's number still falls way short of the British record which is held by Scottish side Celtic, who saw a gathering of 136,505 fans when they defeated Leeds United 2-1 in the 1970 European Cup Semi-final's second leg.
