Axar Patel shone with both ball and bat to take Gujarat to a thrilling win over Railways on Sunday at the Alur Cricket Stadium, Bangalore in the Vijay Hazare trophy. Meanwhile, Jharkhand, Mumbai, Punjab and Maharashtra registered wins.

Put in to bat, Railways raced to 30 runs in five overs before Axar Patel struck to remove Asadullakhan who looked in good touch. After losing two more wickets by 52, Arindam Ghosh and Mahesh Rawat combined for a 132-run partnership. Ghosh remained not out on 96 as Railways set a target of 260 at the end of 50 overs. Axar finished with tight figures of 1/35 off 10 overs in a high-scoring innings.

Gujarat got off to a shaky start after opener S K Patel was bowled lbw in the third ball of the innings. The chase seemed to be in trouble at 126-4 after 29.2 overs, with Gujarat needing 134 runs off 124 balls. None of the top-order batsmen managed to convert their good starts into a big score. Axar, however, came to the team's rescue with a 59-ball 75, and along with R H Bhatt took Gujarat within striking distance of the target. After the duo fell in rapid succession, the tail-enders managed to wrest a win with two balls to spare.
