Confusion around new IPL team salaries – Will Dhoni, Raina gain or lose crores?

“The salary of players as per their contract with their former teams will be protected. The upper limit will be deducted from the total purse of Rs 66 crore. All will be put up on the website,” Rajeev Shukla told a media conference after the draft.

However, team owners are still confused about the payment process with an owner admitting to The Times of India (ToI) that the process still lacks clarity.

“We were confused by some wrong media reports and had to get clarification on the whole process before the draft could begin,” a team owner told ToI.

In the draft on Tuesday in Mumbai,  Pune picked MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Steven Smith and Faf du Plessis, while Rajkot picked Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Brendon McCullum, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo.

As per the tender, the first capped player would be paid 12.5 crore, while the remaining four capped players are to get Rs 9.5 crore, Rs 7.5 crore, Rs 5.5 crore, and Rs 4 crore respectively. However, media reports suggested that the players will be paid the same amount they have been receiving with the previous franchise.

Meanwhile, the unpicked players will go into an auction, which is to be held on February 6 in Bengaluru, closer to the start of IPL 2016 on April 9, with the final on May 29.
