Test opener KL Rahul scored 72 on the opening day to help Board President’s XI post 296 after opting to bat against South Africa in the two-day tour match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. The visitors closed at 46-2 at stumps.

Rahul, who struck 13 fours in his 132-ball effort, fell to off-spinner Simon Harmer, who finished with three wickets.

Rahul had opened in all three Tests in the 2-1 series victory over Sri Lanka in August-September, partnering Shikhar Dhawan, who got injured during the opening Test, and Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara in the other two.

Pujara, coming at No. 3 for Board President’s XI which he is leading, was dismissed for 5, falling to paceman Vernon Philander.

The first of the four-Test series starts in Mohali on November 5.

Brief scores: Indian Board President’s XI 296 in 78.5 overs (KL Rahul 72, K Nair 44, N Ojha 52, D Steyn 3-46, V Philander 2-37, S Harmer 3-41) v South Africa 46-2 in 8.2 overs.
