Spin legend Shane Warne feels that a ‘match-winner’ like Glenn Maxwell should play for Australia in all the formats. He has also applauded skipper Steve Smith for the way he has handled the recent Maxwell controversy, where the 28-year-old was fined for his disrespectful comments on Matthew Wade.

"Glenn Maxwell is a super talent and I'd like to see him in Australian colours in all forms of the game. If there's a spot for him, if he's making runs, get him in," Shane Warne told SEN on Monday.

Maxwell, on Thursday, had spoken about his ambitions to play Test cricket and shared his displeasure at his demotion in the batting order below Mathew Wade for Victoria in Sheffield Shield cricket. He said that the move hampered his chances of selection for Australia’s third Test against South Africa in Adelaide last week, which was duly discarded by Australia coach Darren Lehmann. Maxwell was later fined by the Australian skipper Steve Smith and the side’s leadership group for his disrespectful comments.

Warne has praised the way Steve Smith has handled the matter, but believes that Maxwell, who did not find a place in the starting lineup of the opening game of the Chappell-Hadlee series, is a risk worth taking.

"He's going to play some ridiculous, stupid shots. But you've got to take the good with the bad because out of 10 games he plays, he'll probably win you two off his own bat.

"He's a guy who has got flair and imagination. He's a match-winner. The way Steve Smith handled it (Maxwell's comments) in-house, I thought that was good. But some of that stuff should be kept in-house," Warne explained.

Maxwell has been missing from the Australian team since he was dropped earlier this year in the Caribbean. He has missed the series against Sri Lanka, followed by the series against South Africa. However, he was recalled in the ODI squad for the ongoing series against New Zealand.
