The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which is headed by former BCCI President Sharad Pawar, has decided to file an intervention application before the Supreme Court, highlighting the difficulties in implementing Justice R M Lodha Committee’s recommendations to restructure the board.

MCA decided to move to the Supreme Court after a meeting of the Managing Committee and confirmed the decision through a media release on Monday.

“In a meeting of the Managing Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association to discuss the far-ranging consequences of the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, it was unanimously decided that the Mumbai Cricket Association would file an intervention application before the Supreme Court and highlight the difficulties and inconsistencies in the report,” the media release said.

“Accordingly, the members unanimously authorised Joint Honorary Secretaries and Vice President Ashish Shelar to seek appropriate legal advice and file necessary applications before the Court,” the release added.

Among the recommendations made by the Lodha committee, the ‘one state, one vote’ proposal will affect MCA with four affiliated units from Maharashtra – the MCA, Maharashtra Cricket Association, the Vidarbha Cricket Association, and the Mumbai-based Cricket Club of India.

Another recommendation that could affect the current head of MCA is the proposal to disqualify any member over the age of 70 from the holding office bearer positions in BCCI, with Sharad Pawar now 75 years old.

The MCA decision comes after the BCCI’s decision to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court pointing out the difficulties in implementing the Lodha committee recommendations fully. The Special General Meeting last Friday had also allowed state associations for approaching the apex court separately pointing out the difficulties, according to a report in PTI.
