Nuwan Kulasekara announces retirement from Test cricket
Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday in a bid to concentrate on the shorter formats. The 33-year-old seamer played his last Test match in June 2014 against England at Lords, where Sri Lanka earned a dramatic draw on the last day of the Test.
Kulasekara announced his retirement in a letter addressed to the Sri Lanka Cricket.
“I would like to retire from playing Test cricket with immediate effect. After much thought, I believe it is the right time to retire and I hope it will allow me to better prepare for ODI and T20 cricket, which I would like to continue playing for Sri Lanka subject to good performance and selection,” said Kulasekara, according to a media release from Sri Lanka cricket.
The 33-year-old pacer has played 21 Test matches for Sri Lanka taking 48 wickets at an average of 37.37. The pacer, who made his debut in 2005 against New Zealand at Napier, has the best figures of 4/21.
Although he has not been a part of the Sri Lankan Test team for two years, Kulasekara is an integral part of the limited overs team having played 173 ODIs for the country. He was also ranked the No.1 bowler in ODIs in March 2009 after picking up 47 wickets in the preceding eleven months.
