Rangana Herath set to become oldest Test captaincy debutant in three decades

Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath is set to become the oldest player to make his Test captaincy debut in 30 years after he was named skipper for the two-Test tour of Zimbabwe this month after injuries sidelined regular captain Angelo Mathews and his deputy Dinesh Chandimal.
Herath, 38, retired from limited-overs format in April to focus on the remainder of his Test career, and took 28 wickets to lead the home side’s 3-0 whitewash of Australia in August.
Herath is a veteran of 73 Tests, claiming 332 wickets, and has been Sri Lanka’s ‘go-to’ bowler in Tests since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan in 2010.
Herath will become only the second bowler after Somachandra De’ Silva to lead a Sri Lankan Test side.
