Rohit Sharma: Our goal is to be No. 1 side in the world
Rohit Sharma has reiterated the words of his team mates saying that India aims to be the No.1 in the world. However, the batsman insisted that India would look at it one match at a time and even threw in that message which has of late been repeated by Indian team members -process precedes results.
The Indian cricket team lost their No.1 Test ranking to Pakistan after the fourth Test match against West Indies was washed out due to rain. But Indian batsman Rohit Sharma is upbeat that the team will regain the top ranking ahead of the New Zealand series at home. Sharma, who was in Mumbai to attend the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai's (SJAM) Golden Jubilee Annual Awards 2016, on Saturday spoke to PTI about the Indian team's performance in the Caribbean.
"We had recently come from the West Indies having a successful tour there, so as a team we will like to continue (from) where we left in the West Indies. And our goal is very simple - to be number one side in the world, we were number one for a week but unfortunately we could not get a game in the last Test match (and) we slipped to number two,” he told.
The 29-year old stressed that it's the process which will ultimately bear results. "Again we have to look (at) one series at a time. New Zealand is going to be here very soon and we have to focus on that. I am sure if we do the process right, we will get the results (that) we want," he added.
Chief guest of the event, Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan, also expressed his excitement ahead of the upcoming long Test schedule in India.
"It is exciting to see that so many Test matches are scheduled this year. This kind of season, can change the whole graph of a cricketer's life, career graph, for better or worse actually. So I hope everyone prepares that way and it is exciting time,” he said.
Ajinkya Rahane, who was also present at the event, echoed the views expressed by his compatriots.
"For us (Indian team) it is important as Rohit (Sharma) and Zaheer bhai (Zaheer Khan) said it is important to play one series at a time and that is New Zealand right now and we are very excited about this season because we are going to play 13 Test matches here (in India), it's going to be a long season. I am sure everybody in our team is excited and looking forward to this season. Simple things will take us forward."
India will start their quest to regain the No.1 Test spot against New Zealand on 22nd September, 2016 in the First Test at Kanpur.
