Nike gives new training kits to India after BCCI questioned its quality
After the BCCI questioned the "sub-standard" quality of match and training gears provided to the players, Nike has given a new kit to the side currently playing in Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue will start testing it from the next game till September-October against Australia before the official launch.
The issue was raised at last month's meeting of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), where the player’s concerns about the quality of the kit was taken up strongly by the chairman Vinod Rai.
Following the players complaining about it, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had also questioned the poor quality of match and training gears given to the players by India’s official apparel sponsor Nike.
BCCI CEO Rahul Johri told The Indian Express, “It (Nike’s clothing) has come up for discussion in last CoA meeting and chairman CoA (Vinod Rai) took it very strongly. The team cannot have sub-standard kits and we will be engaging with Nike and he has asked to put our case strongly. We have to engage with them, we will have a meeting with them (Nike) next week and try to resolve it at earliest.”
The action was taken swiftly as new kits were handed out on Tuesday to players present in the optional training session. MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, and Kuldeep Yadav were present and Nike representatives asked them for their feedback.
"The team will start using it from the next game and till the limited-overs home series against Australia in September-October. Though the Nike representatives refused to comment," a source said, “Based on their feedback, the Nike will decide on its official launch.”
Nike’s present contract with BCCI runs till September 30, 2020 and it pays Rs 87,34,000 per match.
