ODI at Eden Gardens the hottest game we have ever played, says Pat Cummins

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins revealed that the soaring temperature and high humidity of Kolkata during the second ODI made it comparable to the hottest one-day game the current team had ever played. Perhaps, the heat contributed to the Aussies loss despite signs of a valiant fightback.

Pat Cummins and the Australian squad had a hard time playing in the hot and humid weather of Kolkata and considered it a big challenge, comparable to the recently concluded Bangladesh tour.

"It felt similar to Dhaka, I reckon, just below Chittagong, but that's the hottest one-day game anyone said they've played. I think the 50 overs felt like it was about 200 overs out there. You only had to look at 'Wadey' (Matthew Wade), it was 15 overs in and he was on all fours. So it's not great conditions," Cummins told cricket.com.au.

In spite of the heat and humidity, Australian bowlers made a significant comeback during the end of India's innings and claimed the last seven wickets for only 67 runs in the final 15 overs. However, most of the Australian players were uncomfortable at the Eden Gardens on Thursday afternoon as they lost the toss and had to field first.

Exhausted by the conditions, Cummins said that all bowlers had to take short breaks after the opening spells to recharge themselves.

"You pretty much try and change all your clothes because they're just sodden through with sweat. If you've got strapping you try and get that re-strapped. You just try and get one or two overs just to cool down and have some ice blocks, change all your gear and try and freshen up," said Cummins.

Australian pacers restricted India to a total score of 252, but the visitors were thrashed in their second successive game of the five-ODI series owing to a misfiring batting line-up. Cummins, disappointed with his batting unit, applauded the bowlers for playing against the strong Indian side.

"As a player and a teammate, it's frustrating when it's out of your control. We got in a position in both games where we could've taken the game away from India. It was unfortunate that there was a couple of wickets but we've just got to try and find a way to fix that up. There are still three games left so we can still win the series.”

"I thought it was a great effort from the five or six bowlers. There were no big overs so I think to keep them to 250 on a really good batting wicket and batting conditions in the afternoon, I thought it was a great job," he concluded.

In the meantime, the team management has decided to rest the ace pacer and he will be returning home after the conclusion of the ODI series in order to prepare for the upcoming Ashes at home. He will skip the succeeding three-match T20I series.
