Agitating over Cauvery issue, a pro-Tamil outfit has threatened to hold protests outside the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai tomorrow. Famous director Bharathiraja wants the game to be postponed but the CSK franchise has confirmed that the games will go on as per the original schedule.

Chennai Super Kings’ return to the IPL was one of the most awaited ones and the emotion was seen not only in the fans but also the players. Ahead of the IPL, the CSK players had a few practise sessions in front of jacked packed stands in Chennai. And come the match day, Chennai Super Kings got off to a winning start as they beat Mumbai Indians by one wicket in a thrilling game. And now their next game is at the Chepauk on April 10 (Tuesday) against Kolkata Knight Riders.

However, there is some tension going around in Chennai and Tamil Nadu. In wake of the Cauvery issue, there was a bandh in Tamil Nadu on Thursday (April 5). This agitation of the people and pro-Tamil outfits is constantly growing and hence they have threatened to protest outside the stadium in Chennai tomorrow.

“If the match is held despite our plea, we will coordinate all democratic forces to stop it by organising a massive picketing protest. Many leaders, organisations will participate. Cricketers knowing Tamil, please understand our sentiments,” TVK chief T Velmurugan told, as reported by Economic Times.

Tamil Nadu has been witnessing protests on a regular basis over the past few days as it is urging the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court which was given on February 16 on the water sharing dispute with Karnataka. The demands of the people also include suspension of electricity supply to Karnataka from the power station till Tamil Nadu gets its due share of Cauvery water.

Veteran film director Bharathiraja feels that the IPL might divert the attention and the prevailing ‘awakening’ among youth in Tamil Nadu might go down.

“Tamil Nadu is boiling... we are not saying there is no need for IPL... Please postpone (the matches). IPL will divert the awakening among the youth over the Cauvery issue,” Bharathiraja said.

Despite the tension, CSK CEO KS Viswanathan confirmed that the home matches will not be cancelled or postponed. He also said that the Chennai city police has been alerted about the entire schedule and they will ensure safety and handle the situation.

Superstar Rajinikanth also felt that it would be a disgrace if IPL games were held but didn’t protest against the games. He wants CSK players to wear black armbands.
