BCCI release clarification after 'damage limitation' accusations in Prithvi Shaw doping case
The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) have released clarification after being accused of 'damage limitation' in the handling of the Prithvi Shaw doping case. The BCCI have released a timeline which shows a gap of more than two months between Shaw's sample collection and NDTL's report.
The BCCI have cleared the air on favouritism accusations in the handling of the Prithvi Shaw doping ban situation by releasing a timeline of the events which took place between his sample collection and the final report from National Dope Testing Laboratory. The report shows a two-month delay between his sample collection and the final report from NDTL, proving their innocence in the matter.
Despite collecting Shaw's sample on February 22, the 19-year-old was only handed a backdated ban, which was made public on 30th July. Meanwhile, the Indian opener had participated in the Indian Premier League, Mumbai T20 League and trained in the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and this attracted criticism from many, who accused the BCCI of protecting the youngster.
However, the report released by the BCCI shows that Shaw's urine sample report was sent to NDTA on February 23, 2019, one day after the sample was collected from the Mumbai opener. After no communication on the matter for more than two months, the BCCI sent an email reminder to NDTL on April 5, 2019, after which the body continued with their proceedings.
It also being reported that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) might also reopen the case handled by a body that is reluctant to come under the purview of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
Last month, the BCCI handed Shaw a retrospective eight-month ban starting from March 16 and ending on November 15, after Terbutaline, a prohibited substance, was found in the youngster's body.
