Zimbabwe Cricket to reinstate suspended governing board
Zimbabwe's Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has decided to reinstate Zimbabwe Cricket's suspended governing board, which was replaced by an interim committee last month. The ICC, which deemed this move as 'political interference', suspended the Zimbabwe Cricket Board with immediate effect.
In what comes as positive news for Zimbabwe Cricket, Zimbabwe's Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has decided to reinstate the country's suspended governing board. The personnel in the board were suspended and the board was completely overhauled and replaced by an interim committee last month, which in turn was deemed as "political interference" by the ICC, leading to the immediate suspension of Zimbabwe from International Cricket.
The ICC gave ZC an October 8 deadline to "unconditionally reinstate" the governing board led by Tavengwa Mukuhlani.
"Accordingly, and pursuant to the said court order, the SRC hereby lifts the suspension of the directors of ZC, including that of the acting managing director [Givemore Makoni], with immediate effect. The interim committee accordingly ceases to administer the affairs of Zimbabwe Cricket forthwith," read a statement released by SRC on August 8th, reported Cricbuzz.
The decision taken by the SRC follows a court order that came after the suspended ZC directors contested the decision in the administrative court of Zimbabwe. The verdict has set the path for Zimbabwe to make their way back into international cricket, but only after ICC's next convention, which is set to happen on October 12th.
The Zimbabwe Men's and Women's cricket team lost their places in the ICC WT20 qualifiers to Nigeria and Namibia respectively, but were handed a major boost after it was announced that the men's team would participate in a tri-series alongside Bangladesh and Afghanistan later this year.
