Sarfraz Ahmed banned for four matches for racial comments made on Andile Phehlukwayo
Sarfraz Ahmed has been handed a four match suspension by the supreme cricketing body, the International Cricket Council, for his racist comments against Andile Phehlukwayo. The incident happened in the second match of the ongoing five match ODI series between South Africa and Pakistan.
Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed will have to serve a four match suspension for his racist comments made during the second ODI game against South Africa. The International Cricket Council(ICC) deemed the comments made by Ahmed as in contravention to the Anti-racism code of the cricketing body.
“Engaging in any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise) which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any reasonable person in the position of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, Umpire Support Personnel or any other person (including a spectator) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin,” read an ICC press release.
When Phehlukwayo was batting at one end during the second ODI, Ahmed made racist comments in Urdu, which was captured on the stump mike. The comments when translated read, "Hey black guy, where's your mother sitting today? What have you got her to say for you today?."
Though Ahmed immediately apologized for the comments through Twitter and South African skipper Faf Du Plessis, later in a conference, said that the team had forgiven Ahmed for his comments. The ICC has taken a strong stand in the matter and has banned the player.
