Constantine announces list of 40 probables for SAFF Cup
Indian national football team coach Stephen Constantine announced on Saturday the list of 40 probables for the forthcoming SAFF Suzuki Cup which is to be held in Trivandrum. The initial 28 players in the list will assemble on December 9 at Kochi for a preparatory camp.
Constantine has retained 24 players from his squad, which was selected for the 2018 World Cup qualifying match against Guam. Harmanjot Singh Khabra, who plays for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League is only one to miss out from the squad against Guam, which India had won 1-0.
The Indian coach also included three players, who ply their trade in the Kolkata Premier League. “We have selected a squad which encompasses all of Indian Football – right from State Leagues, U-19 Academy Players, and Players from I-League and the ISL. We are building a Team for the future,” Constantine said to aiff.com.
“In my first Press Conference in New Delhi, I had mentioned that we will be keeping a tab on all Football Players who play beyond the I-League and the ISL. We are trying to expand our pool of Players,” he said.
“28 players will join us initially. With the ISL going on, it gives us an opportunity to call up those Players that we would not have been able to work with. It’s not bad the way it’s worked out,” he added.
India will take on Sri Lanka in their opening match of the tournament on December 25 at Trivandrum. India are placed in Group A along with Nepal and Sri Lanka.
