“Next season, I won’t be coming”: Roberto Carlos; Zico might follow suit

“There are some offers from clubs European and Asian clubs that I am analysing. National teams can happen but it’s tough because they are in preparation phase for the World Cup. Of course, if I get long-term contract I will not be available (for FC Goa). I gave my word to owners to fulfill my two years contract and I did it. Now, let’s see. I am not saying I will not come back also. Maybe,” Zico was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

The Brazilian took the Goan team to the semi-final of the inaugural season of the ISL, where they were knocked out by the eventual champions Atletico de Kolkata. He has replicated that achievement this season as well, alongwith the added accomplishment of topping the points table in the league phase.

Zico has successfully instilled his philosophy of beautiful attacking football within the club and FC Goa are undoubtedly the most eye-catching side in the ISL currently. Although, he has not completely ruled out the prospect of returning to India next season, he is too big a name to be without job offers from bigger clubs around the world.

Delhi manager Roberto Carlos has, however, confirmed his departure from ISL at the end of this season. The former Real Madrid legend also hinted that he already has an offer on the table. He said, “Next season I won’t be coming. In every professional life, you go with opportunities that come. You perform well and someone else comes with an offer, that’s how it goes”.

Roberto Carlos' team might not have played the most attractive football this season, but they were perhaps the most 'effective' team in the league phase. The defender has instilled a sense of calmness and solidity at the back, while they have showed tremendous character in winning matches with a number of late goals - much welcome changes to the string of disappointing performances they produced last season.
