Single league will help improve Indian football, says Lucio
FC Goa captain Lucio voiced his opinion on the longstanding debate questioning the existence of two different leagues in India — I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL). The Brazilian defender feels that the existence of a single league will help in better channelisation of efforts towards improvement of Indian football.
The future of I-League has been uncertain since the advent of ISL. Several I-League clubs are struggling for survival, as ISL clubs are attracting all the sponsors. AIFF chief Praful Patel has raised hopes of a merger between both leagues.
“We eventually want to bring the two leagues under one common format. For this we will have a working group made up of IMG-R, I-League, AIFF and ISL representatives. They will discuss ways and means for integration. We will meet again and we will see. There is no timeframe that it will only happen next year: but maybe in two-three seasons,” he said.
World Cup winner Lucio agreed with AIFF’s proposal. “I think there should only be one league as that way more focus could be brought on improving the league,” Lucio was quoted by Goal.com.
The 37-year-old also revealed that the presence of Zico had made it easier for him to opt for FC Goa. “This league is very well organised. I’m enjoying it a lot because I like playing football. I knew Zico, I knew his history. Knowing that he wants me in his team, it helped a lot in my choice,” Lucio added.
Asked to compare Zico’s managerial abilities with those of his previous managers, Lucio said, “I don’t like to make comparisons. Not between players, coaches or people. Everyone is unique. They have their own characteristics. Zico has his own way of thinking. He is a very honest guy, works hard. These are his qualities that make him a great coach.”
