ISL 2015: Cesar Farias creates one more super-sub as NorthEast down Chennaiyin
NorthEast United came from behind to complete a double over Chennaiyin FC at the Marina Arena on Wednesday. Silas came off the bench to score the winner for the Highlanders and hand them a 2-1 win. With these three points, NorthEast climbed up to fifth in the points table, while last year's semi-finalist Chennaiyin drop down to seventh.
In the 33rd minute, Chennaiyin right back Mehrajuddin Wadoo hit a long ball for Stiven Mendoza in the NorthEast United box. NorthEast defender Carlos Lopez won the aerial duel with the Colombian striker, but his header reached only as far as Elano at the edge of the box. The Brazilian midfielder ran on to the ball and emphatically volleyed it past the goalkeeper, to provide Chennaiyin with a deserved lead.
NorthEast lifted their game after conceding that goal and managed to equalize a minute before the half-time whistle. Midfielder Bruno Arias picked out Diomansy Kamara at the far post with a delightful cross. The Senegalese striker managed to evade his marker, Wadoo, and headed it towards the goal. Apoula Edel, in Chennaiyin goal, made a good save to keep out Kamara's first effort, but was helpless to prevent the former Fulham forward from scoring from the rebound.
Chennaiyin dominated most of the second half, but a combination of poor finishing and some fine saves by NorthEast goalkeeper Rehenesh TP ensured parity, until the 72nd minute.
NorthEast manager Cesar Farias, who has made a name for himself for making game-changing substitutions, brought on Silas in place of Simao Sabrosa. The Portuguese star made an immediate impact as he received a pass from Kamara, in his stride, and after wrong-footing a defender, curled it calmly inside the far post to score the winner.
