Indian striker Robin Singh is hoping for a successful merger between the I-League and the ISL, which he believes will lead to the betterment of Indian football. Earlier, AIFF secretary Kushal Das had confirmed that the football governing body is trying to bring in a unified football league by 2018.

“According to FIFA, there is only one national tournament in each country. So whether I-League and ISL should merge, it is for the concerned parties to decide. I, as a sportsperson, want to play and my job is to play to my potential and higher, whichever team and tournament I am playing for,” Robin said at the launch of sportswear company Puma’s bold Tricks collection, IANS reported.

The Indian Super League came into existence in 2014, after the I-League, India’s premier football league, found it tough to connect with the masses. The two seasons of the IPL-style franchise based tournament has diminished the popularity of the I-League even further.

Ending months of speculations, AIFF secretary Kushal Das had confirmed, earlier this week, that the football governing body is trying to bring in a unified football league by 2018. Das also said that it won’t just be a mere merger of the two leagues, but a more holistic approach to unite the top clubs in India.

Hoping that the AIFF succeeds in its endeavour, Robin Singh said, “I hope the league will merge, it will be for the betterment of the country. But the merge is not in my hand, my job is to play the game for country and club and I will do that to my full potential”.
