India move up 11 places in latest FIFA rankings

The Indian football team moved up 11 places in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday to reach 152nd. Copa America Centenario runners-up Argentina remained at the top of the rankings, while newly crowned European champions Portugal jumped two places up to reach sixth in the rankings.

The Indian team coached by Stephen Constantine were at No.163 in the rankings in June and moved up 11 places after their 7-1 aggregate win over Laos in the AFC Asian Cup qualification playoffs. India had defeated Laos 1-0 away in the first leg before thrashing them 6-1 at Guwhati in the second leg. India also moved up places in the Asian rankings and went above Myanmar and Singapore to get to 27th in the continent.

In the overall rankings, there were no movements in the top 5 rankings as Copa America Centenario runners-up Argentina remained at the top of the rankings, while Belgium, and Colombia continued at the second and third respectively. World champions Germany, who made it to the semi-final of the Euro, and Copa America Centenario winners Chile also remained at fourth and fifth respectively.

Newly crowned European champions Portugal moved up two places to reach sixth, while Euro runners-up France jumped up 10 places to reach seventh. Spain and Brazil slipped down two places to occupy the eighth and ninth position in the rankings, while Italy moved up two places to complete the top ten. Euro semi-finalists Wales also made a huge jump in the rankings and moved up 15 places to occupy the 11th spot.
