European Golden Boot winner Luis Suarez: “I am in the best team in the world”
FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez won the European Golden Boot award for the second time in his career on Thursday to cap a prolific 2015-16 season with the Catalan club which saw him score 40 goals in the La Liga in 35 matches as the team walked away with the title.
"I didn`t imagine myself as the top scorer, I only thought about being a champion, winning the Champions League, which I have done," Suarez said at the awards ceremony in Barcelona.
The Uruguayan international is part of the most fearsome attacking trio in contemporary club football. While he agreed that playing alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi had its advantages, the former Liverpool forward said he deserved credit for his achievements.
"I have teammates who make it easy but I am not going to take credit from myself because it needs to be done and you need to be in the right place," Suarez said.
Looking back at the season where he scored a staggering 59 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions, Suarez picked out his favorite moments: "There were many beautiful goals, important ones, but the ones I liked the most for what they meant were the two against Real Madrid and one against Atletico Madrid because it allowed us to stay top
Suarez previously won the award in 2013-14 during his time at Liverpool when he shared the honours with Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. However, this time around he was four goals clear of the second-placed Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Suarez went on to say winning titles was far more important than individual awards, but expressed confidence that one of the 'MSN' trio would win the award again next season.
"I am in the best team in the world, with the best players. When you fix an objective you can reach it but the priority is the collective and winning titles as a team. If individual prizes come with that then it`s even better. But if it`s not me who wins them then let it be Leo or Neymar!" he said.
