Indian kabaddi star Rohit Kumar Chillar was arrested on Friday in connection with his wife Lalita’s suicide earlier this week. Police also apprehended Kumar's father, Vijay Singh, as they both have been accused of harassment in audio clips retrieved from the victim’s phone.

According to a senior police officer, Kumar, a Naval officer, was arrested by Delhi Police in Mumbai after being detained on Friday. The kabaddi player is to appear in front of a Mumbai court where Delhi police will seek to transfer the accused back to the capital.

Vijay Singh, formerly a sub-inspector with Delhi Police, surrendered on Friday and was taken into custody in Delhi's Nangloi police station.

“Our team arrested Chillar after completing the requisite formalities with the Navy… there was no resistance. A local court has granted transit remand till Sunday. Chillar is being brought to Delhi and he will be produced before a city court,” DCP Vijay Kumar said.

Chillar and his family have been booked for a case of dowry death after police found a suicide note and retrieved two audio recordings from Lalita's phone, where the deceased had accused the Chillars of beating her.

Police said two voice messages were found on the phonein which Lalita has detailed the “torture” that she was subjected to by her in-laws that eventually led her to commit suicide.

Lalita's father, Karan Singh, has said Chillar’s family had demanded an SUV in dowry.

“I want Rohit to cremate me… let him grieve… the man who brought me to this house used to beat me and he treated me in an inhuman manner… even his parents used to beat me… his sister abused me… I didn’t do anything… but I don’t want anything to happen to them after my death,” Lalita reportedly said in the audio clip.
