Tamil Nadu win low-scoring encounter to enter semis of Hazare trophy
Tamil Nadu ousted Uttar Pradesh in a low-scoring affair in the quarter-final of the Vijay Hazare trophy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Thursday. Bowling first, Tamil Nadu restricted Uttar Pradesh to 168 and chased the target in 41.2 overs to join Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat in the final four.

Uttar Pradesh won the toss and elected to bat first, but did not inflict any serious damage as the opening pair was sent back to the pavilion within seven overs. Shubham Chaubey departed first after scoring six runs, with Lakshmipathy Balaji sending him back to the pavilion. Praveen Kumar also followed suit, caught and bowled by Vijay Shankar in the first ball of the seventh over.
The batting collapse continued with the Uttar Pradesh batsmen struggling to a position of 79/6 in the 25th over. Rinku Singh was the sole man to guide his team to a decent total scoring 60 off 97 balls, before being stumped by Dinesh Karthik. Piyush Chawla also stuck around and managed 29 runs, which helped them put up a total of 168. Tamil Nadu captain R Ashwin took two wickets for 27 runs, while veteran Balaji chipped in with 3/32 to bowl out their rivals for a paltry score.
Tamil Nadu also suffered a similar fate as none of their top three batsmen could get past the single digit. Tamil Nadu was reduced to 17/4 before Murali Vijay, steadied their innings scoring a fluent knock of 39. Baba Indrajith helped Vijay, and eventually scored 48 off 78 balls to take his side to 127/7 before he too gave away his wicket. Rajagopal Sathish stood firm, and guided his team to the target and sealed the match with a wicket to spare.
