ICC consider Code of Conduct charges against Windies players

After a meeting in its Dubai headquarters, the ICC firstly gave their heartiest congratulations to the WICB and the West Indies players for achieving a treble by winning the men’s, women’s and boy's World Cups.

But the ICC also said it was "very seriously considering" imposing Code of Conduct charges against some of the West Indies players for comments after the final that were deemed "inappropriate" and "disrespectful".

"The board acknowledged an apology by the WICB but was disappointed to note that such behaviour had detracted from the success of what was otherwise a magnificent tournament and final," said the ICC in its statement.

Shashank Manohar, the ICC chairman, seemed to single out Marlon Samuels for criticism after the man-of-the-match in the final was not “gracious in victory”.

Marlon Samuels had apparently taunted Ben Stokes, who was bowling the final over, after the Englishman was smacked for four successive sixes by Carlos Brathwaite in a dramatic last-over win for the Windies.

"The sport of cricket is proud of its unique spirit and this involves being gracious in victory as well as defeat and respectful at all times to the game, one's opponents, the sponsors and the fans," said Manohar.

Meanwhile, the ICC announced that leading non-Test playing nations like Afghanistan and Ireland were to be boosted by USD 500,000 each from the ICC, as a part of a "short-term" one-day international fund and thus help them host more bilateral series.
