Jasprit Bumrah: Don’t know why people think I bowl only yorkers

After a hectic last six months, which saw him star for India in the Asia Cup and the World T20, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Sunday has brushed off claims that he is just a T20 bowler. The 22-year-old also added that he works on improving all types of deliveries including the yorker.

Jasprit Bumrah has become a yorker expert for the Indian team after his heroics in the Asia Cup T20 and World T20. The 22-year-old also had a fairly good Indian Premier League season scalping 15 wickets in 14 matches for Mumbai Indians. However, in an exclusive interaction with the Deccan Chronicle the right-arm pacer shrugged off talks about him as a yorker specialist, and said that yorker is just one of the deliveries in his armoury.

“There are a lot of deliveries. Yorker is not the only ball which I bowl. I bowl a lot of balls like the length deliveries, in-swingers; I have a slower ball and a bouncer. I don’t know why people think I bowl only yorkers. Yorker is only one of them, which is helpful in the depth overs at any stage of it, but I work on all forms of deliveries.

“I talk to Shane Bond, Lasith Malinga and a lot of other people who help me to add new stuff to my bowling. Only one ball will never make you successful. If you keep on improving and adding new stuff, that will help you as a bowler. Otherwise, people will know that he bowls this ball. You have to bring something new always so that the batsmen cannot predict the bowler,” Bumrah told the Deccan Chronicle.

Although Bumrah made his debut for India in the last match of the five-match ODI series in Australia, he is known as a T20 specialist having done well for the national team in the shortest format. The Gujarat-lad, who has been included in the Indian team for the tour of Zimbabwe, expressed his disagreement with the tag of a T20 specialist, and said that he has shown his capabilities in Ranji Trophy and for India A.

“It doesn’t matter to me what people think or what people say. I don’t pay much attention to that. I know what I have done. I have done well in Ranji trophy as well as I have played for India A. I know what I can do, where I stand,” the 22-year-old said.

Bumrah also thanked Indian captain MS Dhoni for giving him the confidence to perform at the international level.

“It’s always very good. It gives me the confidence to express myself because he has that self-belief. I can show my capability. It also gives me the confidence to do all the things I know I can do best, back my strengths and go for it. It’s the best feeling for a youngster who has come into the side,” Bumrah added.
