India was dealt with an injury blow at the start of the third Test against England at Mohali on Saturday, with opener KL Rahul forced to sit out of the match. His Karnataka state-mate Karun Nair will make his Test debut, with wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel possibly the makeshift opener.

Rahul was recalled for the second Test in Vizag after recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained in the opening Test against New Zealand last month. Rahul, who scored duck and 10 in India’s 246-run win in Vizag, reportedly suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury at nets on Friday.

England won the toss and opted to bat first in Mohali.

Promising Nair opened with Rahul in both the ODIs he played in Zimbabwe and had been called up as a replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in the squad for the third and final Test against New Zealand.

Specialist opener Gautam Gambhir was dropped from the squad for the final three England Tests, and Dhawan did not get a recall despite proving his fitness in the Ranji Trophy.
