Numbers and records from India's win in their 500th Test
India defeated New Zealand in the 1st Test of the series by a colossal 197 runs to take a 1-0 lead, hence marking their 500th Test with a win – like they did in their 300th and 400th Tests as well. Here are some of the most intriguing stats and numbers from the game that you need to know.
1 - Number of India bowlers who have taken more 10-wicket hauls than Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin completed his fifth 10- wicket haul in the first Test. He now has Anil Kumble's record of eight 10-wicket haul firmly in his sights.
1 - Only one bowler has taken 200 Test wickets in lesser matches than Ravichandran Ashwin. Clarrie Grimmett reached the landmark in 36 Tests, whereas the Indian reached in 37 Tests.
1 – Number of Tests in which India has set a higher target than the 434 in this match. India gave New Zealand a target of 617 in Wellington in the 2008-09 series.
2 - Number of Tests which have had more fifties without a single century. This Test match has seen 10 fifties, but none of the batsmen managed to reach the three-figure mark.
3 - It is only the third time India have scored more than 300 in both the innings against New Zealand. India has done this before at Napier and Wellington.
3 – Number of Tests in which Kiwi spinners have taken 10 or more wickets against India. They did it for the first time in Nagpur in the 1969-70 and then repeated this feat in the 2011-12 series at Ahmedabad.
3 – Number of Tests that have had three 100-run partnerships for the 2nd wicket. It happened for the first time when England faced Australia at the Lord's in 1953 and then for the second time when Australia hosted Pakistan at the MCG in the 1972-73 series.
4 – The number of catches taken by Ross Taylor in this game. It is the highest by a Kiwi fielder in India.
7 - Jadeja became the seventh player to score a fifty and taking a fifer in Test matches for India on home soil. Dattu Phadkar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, Roger Binny, Zaheer Khan, and R Ashwin have done it before him.
8 - Vijay and Pujara became the eighth Indian pair to register two-century partnerships in a Test.
11 - Consecutive Tests for Virat Kohli without losing a game as the skipper.
15 - Mark Craig has taken 15 Tests to reach the 50-wicket mark, which is the second-fastest for a New Zealand spinner. The record is with Hedley Howarth and Daniel Vettori, who achieved that after 14 matches each.
19 - Five-wicket hauls for Ashwin after 37 Tests. It is the joint third-most, alongside Waqar Younis, for any player.
75 - It is the highest by a New Zealand skipper in his maiden innings while captaining in India.
500 - This is the 500th Test match of the country. India earlier lost its 100th Test and drawn its 200th Test. However, they have now gone on to win their 300th, 400th, and 500th Test matches.
1000 - Rohit Sharma completed his 1,000 runs in Test cricket. He has achieved this feat after 33 innings.
