Virat Kohli doesn't follow MS Dhoni’s methods, says Michael Hussey

Michael Hussey shares a good camaraderie with former India skipper Mahendra Singh with whom he had won two consecutive Indian Premier League titles back in 2010 and 2011. And the batting maestro believes that young Virat Kohli has made his own identity by not following Dhoni’s methods which fetched the side the World T20, World Cup and ICC Championship Trophy.

“MS Dhoni was a wonderful captain and it was always going to be a challenge for Kohli to fill Dhoni's big shoes. But the good thing about Virat is he didn't want to follow Dhoni's methods. He has been his own man and led the side in his own way. He has been true to his own personality,” said Hussey.

The 48-year-old, who has 23 centuries for the Kangaroos, stated that Kohli reminds him of Ricky Ponting. “He has got this great will to win and I can see parallels of Ricky Ponting's captaincy in Kohli. Ponting was always hungry for success and would keep pushing his team."

Hussey also believes that Dhoni should go out of the game on his own terms after what he was done for Indian cricket. Commenting on if he should retire, he said, “If he believes he can play the next World Cup, who is to doubt him? He is a very modest and honest man. If he thinks he cannot contribute to India's cause in the World Cup, I don't think he will be there.”

Australia will visit India for a limited-overs series next month and they haven’t been successful here in the past few visits. Hussey stated that adapting to the slow pitches would be the side’s biggest challenge. “India have been a frontier where we haven't done well. Obviously, the Ashes and World Cups are prestigious, but winning in India is a huge goal for us. The hardest thing for Australians is to adapt to slow Indian pitches. But the current players have had great exposure to Indian conditions through IPL. We played well in the last Test series in India. So, this will be a great chance to create an upset.”
