Rohit Sharma has hailed MS Dhoni as a true leader and thanked him for making him open the batting in the 2013 Champions Trophy alongside Shikhar Dhawan. The 29-year-old has played most of his limited-overs international cricket under Dhoni, and said he will miss him at the helm.

Sharma took to Twitter to thank Dhoni for shaping his career after the latter stepped down as captain of the limited-overs side, making way for Virat Kohli to take over.

“A true leader @msdhoni he influenced so many cricketing careers including mine when he asked me to open in the ICC Champions Trophy. Will miss you at the helm,” Sharma tweeted.

Dhoni’s experiment at the Champions Trophy not only clicked, it also provided the Mumbai batsman’s career an impetus , and he hasn’t looked back since in the overs-limit format. Sharma, who has appeared in 153 ODIs and 62 T20Is, has faced a lot of criticism over his inconsistency in recent times, but Dhoni has always kept his faith on the Mumbaikar’s talent. It will be interesting to see whether Kohli will continue to do so.
