Gary Stead appointed New Zealand cricket coach
Gary Stead has been appointed as the replacement for Mike Hesson, who resigned from the post in June 2018 citing personal reasons, for the role of New Zealand’s cricket coach today. Stead has stated that it will be an honour and privilege to work with the team to help them develop.
Before his career as a coach, Gary Stead served as a Test batsman in the New Zealand team. Replacing Mike Hesson on Wednesday, former New Zealand coach, Stead said that he wishes to help to team develop as they had done under Hesson. Though playing for only five Tests in 1999, Stead has evolved as an efficient coach over the years. Besides playing a significant role in Canterbury’s success in the domestic cricket, he also mentored the White Ferns, national women's team to World Cup finals in the year 2009.
“This is a well-established and high-performing Black Caps side with an excellent captain in Kane Williamson and a real desire to win series and titles. It’s an honour and a privilege to be part of that. I can’t wait to get started,” Stead said.
Former New Zealand batsman Peter Fulton has full confidence that Stead will continue the good work of Hesson.
“He’ll be very well organised, a lot of detail and a really good thinker about the game,” he told Radio Sport. New Zealand Cricket have made it pretty obvious they were keen for someone who’s going to come in and not rock the boat too much,” Fulton told Radio Sport.
Wanting to retire from the work hassle, Hesson had declared his leave in June, ignoring the whole one year he had left in his contract for some family time. New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White is completely satisfied with this new development, stating Stead has proved his efficiency as a coach.
“He has excellent qualifications, a solid temperament, vast experience, and is open to innovation,” White said.
