I think we can do a research into MS Dhoni’s style of wicketkeeping, says Sridhar
Indian fielding coach, R Shridhar, feels that MS Dhoni’s wicket-keeping skills are so unique that there should be a research paper written on just about how magnificent his style really is. In the ongoing series, Dhoni became the first Indian keeper to effect 400 dismissals in ODIs alone.
Dhoni may not be as young as he used to be anymore, but that does not stop him from putting in some marvellous display’s behind the stump to help the Indian bowlers pick up some crucial wickets. The Indian Test team certainly missed his presence during the 2-1 Test series loss to the South Africans last month, as Wriddhiman Saha and Parthiv Patel struggled to keep up the standard set by Dhoni behind the wickets.
Ever since his first match as a keeper, MS Dhoni has amassed 295 catches and 106 stumpings in 316 ODI matches. Sridhar admitted that Dhoni is not big on wicket-keeping drills during training sessions, but manages to surprise everyone with some swift stumpings and quick run-outs.
“Dhoni has got his own style, which is so successful for him. I think we can do a research into his style of wicketkeeping and I would like to call it The Mahi Way. There are so many things to learn from that and so many things that other young keepers may not even be able to contemplate. He is unique in his own way and that is exactly how cricketers should be,” Sridhar said according to sources off PTI.
The World Cup-winning captain recently became the fourth keeper in history to effect 400 dismissals in the ODI format in a list led by former Sri Lankan captain K Sangakkara, Aussie keeper Adam Gilchrist and SA veteran Mark Boucher. Sangakkara leads the chart with 482 dismissals from 404 matches and is followed by Australian great Gilchrist with 472 dismissals from 287 games. South African Boucher is third in this list with a tally of 424 dismissals from 295 matches.
“He has got great hands. He has definitely the best glovesman as far as keeping for spinners goes. His hands work at the speed of lightning, for stumpings we all know that.
“That is something which is very innate to him and great to watch. At the same time, for somebody who doesn't have that skill, it's a big challenge to get there,” Sridhar stated.
India has a poor record at St George Park, the location for the penultimate ODI as they have never won an ODI here in five attempts. But the visitors were still in the running to make history as they stood on the cusp of a first-ever ODI series win on South African soil.
