Dale Steyn, on Monday, announced his retirement from Test Cricket, which he believes is the best format of the game. While the decision is practical since it will help him prolong his career in the shorter formats, Steyn implied he’ll have a tough time being away from it, stating it “terrifying”.

Dale Steyn was always supposed to go down as one of the South African fast bowling legends when he decided to hang his boots. And so he did on Monday, August 5, when moments after the conclusion of the 1st Ashes Test, the 36-year-old announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.

“Today I walk away from a format of the game I love so much. In my opinion Test cricket is the best version of this game. It tests you mentally, physically, emotionally. It’s terrible to consider never playing another Test again but what’s more terrifying is the thought of never playing again at all. So I will be focusing on ODIs and T20s for the rest of my career to maximise my full potential and ensure my longevity in this sport,” Dale Steyn bids adieu to Test Cricket in a media release from Cricket South Africa, as reported the AFP.

CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe has heaped praise on the veteran fast bowler, hailing him as one one of the best of all time. He further designated Steyn as an inspiration for the youngsters.

"Dale is undoubtedly one of the all-time greats of cricket. From the time he made his test debut against England in 2004 and dismissed their captain, Michael Vaughan, with a superb delivery, he has been one of the standout fast bowlers in world cricket”, said Moroe.

"He has led the South African attack brilliantly and has set the standard for our future generations to follow. More than that he has been a wonderful mentor to our next generation of speedsters," Moroe concluded.
