Reports | BCCI relaxes age fraud rule
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to relax the age fraud rule, according to the minutes of a Committee of Administrators (CoA) meeting held on June 29. The board will allow the players to play in inter-club matches in the second year of their two-year ban.
As per the earlier policy, cricketers found guilty of age fraud or birth certificate tampering were suspended from playing any BCCI matches for the entire duration of the ban. But after much deliberation, the Supreme Court-appointed CoA has decided to revise the policy.
Under the new norms — uploaded on the BCCI website on Wednesday — such players will be allowed to feature in inter-club matches or tournaments during the second year.
“After some discussion, the CoA approved the revision in the age fraud policy to the extent of state associations permitting participation in club matches/tournaments in the second year of the two-year ban,” the minutes mentioned, reported Sportstar.
The revision comes just over half a year after the BCCI had made it clear that a cricketer guilty of age fraud will be barred from all its recognised tournaments for two years.
Recently, Rasikh Salam, a 20-year-old fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, was banned for two years for tampering with his birth certificate. Salam had featured in Mumbai Indians’ opening match (against Delhi Capitals) in the IPL this year. Salam conceded 42 off his four wicketless-overs.
