The national T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy had a suspected bookie call during the Surat leg of the tournament and it was confirmed by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. The player who was approached was from the Karnataka side and he quickly informed BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) about it.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly confirmed in a statement that there was a bookie approach made towards one of the players of the Karnataka side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament. The player had got a phone call from the bookie and he quickly informed the ACU about it. This proves that spot-fixing has begun to plague domestic T20 competitions as well as other T20 leagues around the world.

“A person, not yet identified, called up and tried to establish contact. The conversation was along the lines of ‘if we can be of any help, let us know’. The number from which the call came is from somewhere in Gujarat and the caller is being chased for more information,” said a source in the BCCI ACU to Hindustan Times.

The ACU is now trying to find the connection of the bookie with other leagues like the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) and the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The KPL spot-fixing scandal had already sent shockwaves throughout the country with players like CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi being arrested for allegedly being involved in spot-fixing.

“It is very difficult to stop (state-level) tournaments just because somebody is approached. In some of the states, it has gone to the next level. We are dealing with it and we need to get the anti-corruption system right,” BCCI President Ganguly stated.

The ACU is trying there best to extract more information about the people behind this scandal and has put the other leagues like KPL and TNPL under their scanner for more such bookie approaches.
