Couldn’t have predicted taste of our own medicine by the Indian pacers, says Ian Bishop

West Indies pace great Ian Bishop said he did not expect such drastic improvement from Indian fast bowlers. India has maintained a constant rise in their performance, especially in Tests by the virtue of their fast bowlers’ extraordinary display that has overshadowed the spinners' contribution.

India recorded their 12th consecutive home series win in Tests after they whitewashed Bangladesh 2-0. India has been a dominating force and a constant No.1 Test side for a few years now. It came as a surprise to all when Indian pacers started to overshadow the performance of spinners consistently.

Indian fast bowlers have been doing well in overseas condition and recently they contributed to a historic series win in Australia that was followed by a 2-0 victory in West Indies. Following that Ian Bishop said in an interview to ESPNCricinfo, "I couldn't have predicted that India's fast bowlers would come to the Caribbean, for example, and do to us what we did to them so many decades ago! So credit to Bharat Arun, the bowling coach, and the administrators and captains. I couldn't see this much (improvement), but I thought there was a great deal of promise in having guys who could bowl close to, or over, 90mph."

However, he believes that the likes of Mohammed Shami, Jusprit Bumrah are end products of the process that was being started from the former greats like Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan. With an Indian skipper like Virat Kohli who has a strong linking for fast bowlers and believes in the proper grooming of the pacers, it has been a boon for Indian cricket.

"Let's remember that this group of bowlers did not emanate right now. The foundation was laid - if you go back to Kapil and down the line, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Sreesanth. And now it's been built on with a captain who likes fast bowlers, who believes in them. But also the fact that you've found a generational talent in Jasprit Bumrah. Generational because he plays all formats of the game very well. I couldn't have predicted that. And Shami has taken his game to another level. Ishant has also gone up another level, which I didn't foresee," he added.

While praising the Indian pacers, Bishop advised them to stay away from all sorts of comparisons that come in the media as those can easily distract them from their real goal.

"Well, they have been performing that well that the comparisons are going to come. I would want to stay away from it, because I don't know how you measure it. When people talk about Holding and Garner and Marshall and Croft and Roberts - who bowled together for so many years - how do you compare with that?"
