ICC World Cup 2019 | As a team, we definitely want to be the scrappers, says Lockie Ferguson
Lockie Ferguson has stated that New Zealand always love to fly under the radar and the underdog tag is something that takes the pressure away from them. The pacer has also added that the team takes pride in their ability to come back from tough situations and scrap their way to victories.
New Zealand’s campaign this World Cup can certainly be divided into two parts - the first one being a journey of ruthless consistency and the second one seeing everything falling apart before they scrapped through the league phase with NRR advantage over Pakistan. That gave the Indian fans huge solace and even before the semi-final begins, most have ruled the Kiwis out. Lockie Ferguson has stated that in a way, it is good as the team inherently likes to be known as scrappers.
“It’s an interesting one. I guess in World Cups obviously big games get pumped up and where we stand is the fourth going into the semi-finals so naturally, I guess they back India. But as New Zealanders we are often the underdogs and I guess that’s a position we like to be in and it’s knockout cricket now, so it’s all on Tuesday and the better team will go through,” Ferguson was quoted as saying by PTI.
“As a team, we definitely want to be the scrappers, guys that scrap for wins, we don’t always win pretty. But in a way we kind of pride ourselves on the ability to come back from tough situations and scrap our way and give ourselves an opportunity to win,” the pacer said.
Ferguson missed New Zealand’s last league game against England due to a hamstring injury and while there were doubts about his inclusion for the semis, the Auckland pacer is hopeful of making a comeback to the playing XI against India.
“There was definitely some tightness, particularly the day before the game. The scans came back, it was nothing too serious so a few days off. Hopefully, I’ll get out today and have a run around and everything will be good,” the New Zealand pacer added.
