Questions asked of BCCI selectors after some curious decisions for Windies tour
The selectors of the Indian cricket team have come under scrutiny with questions being raised as to whether they have been communicating enough with the squad players. Some players are picked and dropped often from the squad and thus there is a need to keep them informed of the reasons for the same.
The Indian selectors have been a controversial topic for as long as one can remember, which is bound to happen in a country with more than a billion people having separate opinions. However, while there have been questions regarding some of the choices they have been making regarding the squads, a new issue has been raised citing their behaviour.
People in the know of things believe that the selectors have simply not been communicating enough with players that keep going in and out of the national team. While most expected to see a young team travelling to the Carribean, most senior players have been named on the list bar MS Dhoni who is serving the military presently and Hardik Pandya who is having problems with his back.
This has led to the question of whether players like Shubman Gill, who has been in excellent touch for India ‘A’ off late as well as World Cup squad members Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik, and Mayank Agarwal being told the reasons for the exclusion.
"Gill, I understand. They might possibly play him in a home series and take it from there. Some other deserving players are back, which is good. Some decisions are baffling, which has been more or less a norm. But what's more intriguing here is whether the selectors have tried talking to these players over the last 24 months. Telling them what they see or have in store for them?" TOI reported those tracking this team as saying.
Previously, Murali Vijay had also expressed the concern after he had been dropped after the second test in India’s 2018 tour of England. The opener had stated that “there had been no communication with the selectors,” confirming the doubts of the cryptic considering a few other players have been as vocal about the issue.
The BCCI does not have a policy which allows selectors to communicate frequently with the players regarding their decisions, with past selectors having explained that "speaking to all players at all times can be a very demanding task and not possible.” However, it is necessary to keep the fringe players in the loop and the one question that stands is, whose responsibility is it at the end of the day to explain the decisions to these fringe players.
