Former South African skipper Graeme Smith has pulled out from the contention of becoming Cricket South Africa’s(CSA) director of cricket. The veteran batsman revealed, on Thursday, that he was not confident enough about the freedom related to the position and hence there was no point doing it.

The 38-year-old cricketer did express his will to take up the role but only to bring about the much-needed changes in South Africa’s cricket setup. As Smith realized that he won’t have the freedom to execute duties in his own terms, after several weeks of discussion, he withdrew from the race.

Earlier, Smith had confirmed that he had been interviewed by CSA for a position that would effectively have put him in charge of the national team. South Africa have been in a poor form right since they lost the home Test series against Sri Lanka in February till now as they lost the away Test series in India. To the audience, it was a great move since something similar happened with India with Sourav Ganguly coming in as board President.

However, the former Proteas cricketer announced on his Twitter, on November 14, that he is not interested in the role anymore.

“I would love to have taken on the role. However, despite my obvious desire to make a difference, during the long and, at times, frustrating process over the last 10 or so weeks of discussions, I have not developed the necessary confidence that I would be given the level of freedom and support to initiate the required changes,” Smith revealed.
