IND vs BAN | Marketing Tests like ODIs and T20s very crucial, reckons Virat Kohli
Indian captain Virat Kohli feels that Test cricket needs to be promoted in the same way as ODI and T20 cricket are and that if promoted properly, large crowds will be attracted. Eden Gardens saw a packed house for all three days as India rolled over Bangladesh to complete a series whitewash.
Virat Kohli was extremely happy with the performance of the team but was also happy with the response that the D/N Test got in the form of large crowds entering the stadium. He believes that with proper promotion even the longest format of the game will interest the viewers and high-quality cricket shown by the Indian cricket team will add icing to the cake.
"Marketing Test cricket like T20Is and ODIs is very crucial," Kohli said at the post-match press conference.
"It's not just about the players, but also the management, cricket board, broadcasters who are responsible for making Test cricket a hot product. The fans need to experience cricket and not just watch it."
Kohli recommended promoting Test cricket among the youth as one of the key ways to grow the popularity of the longest format.
"If enough buzz is created, then fans will be keen to come to the ground. I am a big fan of having interactive sessions with fans, like it happens abroad… Maybe school children can interact with the players during lunch," Kohli stated.
Australian Test skipper Tim Paine in one of the press-conferences cheekily took a dig at Kohli about asking his permission to play a pink-ball Test next summer when India tour Australia. Kohli believes that practice is the key before such pink-ball matches and so he reckons a practice game would be ideal before any pink-ball game abroad.
"Bangladesh came in without any match practice. We had the advantage because it was our home conditions. Maybe when we play abroad, we will find it more challenging. So a practice game before that is a must. You can't play it (day-night Test) on a short notice," he asserted.
Newly-elected BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has always been an admirer of Kohli and the fact that his and Kohli's ideas match will only improve Indian cricket leaps and bounds.
"Dada (Ganguly) was very open and welcoming in understanding what the team thinks about playing with pink ball and it was in sync with his thoughts," Kohli concluded.
