The upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup will be the first ICC event where women will earn the same prize money as their male counterparts. The cricket governing body has announced a 134% increase in the prize for the winning team this year, a notable jump from the amount awarded to Australia last year.

‌In a significant boost for women’s cricket, the ICC has announced equal prize money for men and women in World Cups, starting with the Women’s T20 World Cup set to take place in the UAE next month.

The increase in prize money for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 mirrors a broader trend, with the prize pool for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 having risen to a total of 3.5 million USD. The champions of this year’s tournament will earn 2.34 million USD—a staggering 134% increase from the 1 million USD awarded to Australia when they won in South Africa in 2023.

The runners-up will also benefit from the same 134% increase, taking home 1.17 million USD in this edition. Semi-finalists will receive 675,000 USD each, more than triple the amount they received in 2023. Additionally, each group stage win will bring teams 31,154 USD, while the six teams that do not reach the semifinals will share a total of 1.35 million USD, based on their final standings.

The ICC statement reads, “ This historic prize reward not only aligns with the ICC’s vision for parity between the men’s and women’s games but also further elevates the status of the Women’s T20 World Cup as one of the premier events in the calendar.”

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to kick off on October 3, with Bangladesh facing Scotland at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
