‌Guyana Amazon Warriors stopped Rangpur Riders from defending their Global Super League title as they pulled off a 32-run win in the final of the 2025 campaign in Guyana on Saturday. Opting to bat first at the Providence Stadium, the home side posted a mammoth 196/4 in 20 overs with contrasting half-centuries from Johnson Charles (67 off 48) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (66 off 38).

In reply, Rangpur were skittled out for 164 with Iftikhar Ahmed and Saif Hassan scoring 46 and 41, respectively. The hosts’ bowling was led by medium-pacer Dwaine Pretorius, who finished with 3/37 in four overs, while the spin duo of Imran Tahir and Gudakesh Motie picked up two wickets each.

Though Shimron Hetmyer could not contribute to Guyana’s cause with the bat, he held his nerve to complete an excellent catch during the chase. The match was only headed in one direction when Rangpur were reduced to 126/8 with a further 71 runs needed in 20 balls.

But Mahidul Islam Ankon decided to delay the inevitable as he entertained the crowd with some big hits during his knock of 30 from 17 balls. But just as he tried to reduce the margin of defeat with some more big hits, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie stepped in to bowl the final over.

Mahidul, even after stepping out to a flighted delivery, could not reach the pitch of the ball as he ended up making contact with the bottom part of his bat. As the ball flew up towards the long-on boundary, Hetmyer sprinted in to take the catch.

Though the West Indies batter slipped and fell onto the ground, he never lost sight of the ball as he lay back to complete the catch before resting his back on the field. A moment which could have gone horribly wrong was dealt with calmly by Hetmyer, who was relieved to recover from his earlier mistake, and sent the batter back to the dressing room.
