It is refreshing to see youngsters bustling with energy but Abhigyan Kundu’s over-enthusiasm cost him in the ICC U19 World Cup semifinal against Afghanistan. The Indian Colts’ wicketkeeper missed a straightforward attempt to run out Uzairullah Niazai, gifting the batter a well-deserved century.

‌Afghanistan had an excellent start after opting to bat against India in the semifinal of the ICC U19 World Cup in Harare on Wednesday. The openers provided a solid platform before Faisal Shinozada and Uzairullah Niazai took the side to a strong position with their 148-run partnership for the third wicket. Faisal’s scorching form saw him complete his second consecutive century before being dismissed for a 93-ball 110, after hitting 15 boundaries.

However, Uzairullah, who was on 38 off 58 balls when Faisal reached his century, stunningly shifted gears with seven fours and two sixes to be in pole position to reach his three-figure mark in the final over. After a fumble from bowler Henil Patel allowed him to complete a double in the second ball, Uzairullah’s fortune shone bright again a ball later.

After attempting a pull shot, the batter who was on 98, slipped at the non-striker’s end but still attempted a non-existent double in a desperate bid to complete his century and get back to strike as well. He was way short as a decent throw came straight to wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu who made a mess of it.

Kundu, after collecting the ball, took his eyes off it and looked at the batter while trying to break the timber but paid a heavy price missing to hit it. He was late on his second attempt as Uzairullah’s desperate dive saved him as the stumps were broken after he slid in.

Twitter was in splits as Kundu’s attempted no-look stumping went hilariously wrong gifting the Afghan batter a well-deserved century and the side a formidable total of 310/4.
